A late goal in stoppage time gives the Mexican side a win in Madison
MADISON, WI: On Thursday, Forward Madison FC played an international friendly against Atlante FC from Liga de Expansión MX. Special guest, Milwaukee Bucks star Bobby Portis, made an appearance at the match, hosting a meet and greet before kickoff. Tonight was the two year anniversary of the Milwaukee Bucks winning the NBA championship and fans had an opportunity to relive the positive memories with Portis in-person. For the international friendly, both clubs took the pitch just after 7pm.
The beginning of the match was filled with new faces, as Forward Madison attacked with new energy on the field. Atlante FC brought physicality and fresh craft to the match, keeping the Flamingos on their toes during the first half. Atlante had a few major opportunities, including at least three corners, but FMFC goalkeeper Martin Sanchez kept the balls out of the net. The half ended in a 0-0 draw, with both teams headed into the locker room to draw up some new strategies.
Atlante FC made a few substitutions to start the second half, and both teams played determined to be the first to score. Forward Madison continued to press in the final third, and in the 54th minute, they were able to put one in the back of the net to go up 1-0. As a result, Atlante FC played with urgency, creating major opportunities to break down a strong FMFC backline. In the 80th minute, Atlante FC scored off a penalty kick to tie the match 1-1. Both teams continued to possess the ball in order to create the best chance for their team, but in stoppage time, Atlante FC scored off of a long shot to end the match 2-1 against Forward Madison FC.
