Forward Madison FC Re-Sign Goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann
MADISON, WI: Forward Madison FC has re-signed Bernd Schipmann, a 29-year-old goalkeeper from Münster, Germany, pending league and federation approval. Schipmann returns to Madison following a solid 2023 season performance in his first year in USL League One.
Schipmann played every minute of the season, recording 84 saves from 128 shots faced, two from the penalty spot. He documented 12 clean sheets, which, not only, was the second-most in the league but also set a club record for the number of clean sheets in a season. Schipmann’s leadership and calmness in the back will be key to Forward’s backline for the upcoming season.
“Bernd had a strong year with us in 2023, exemplified by him recording the 2nd most shutouts in USL League One. Along with the other key pieces to our backline, returning Bernd gives us continuity and understanding to build on in the back for 2024,” said Head Coach Matt Glaeser. “His composure, shot-stopping ability, and quality distribution align with what we look for in our goalkeepers and make him a solid returning player.”
Schipmann grew up in Germany and began his professional soccer career playing for Schalke 04 II and Holstein Kiel’s II. In 2018, the goalkeeper left Holstein Kiel II for Oberliga Westfalen club Rot Weiss Ahlen, where he made 61 appearances over three years and logged 11 clean sheets.
These accolades helped him get called up to the Philippines national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches. On the international stage, Schipmann made three appearances for his national team, one of which was a clean sheet against Guam in 2021.
The ‘Mingos will play their first home match of the season on Saturday, April 13th against Henny Derby rivals, Richmond Kickers. Season tickets for the 2024 Forward Madison season are on sale now. Secure your seats to every match, including the Home Opener, here.
