Forward Madison FC will travel across the country in a nation-wide bus tour before its match on Sept. 14 in Richmond, Va., the club announced Monday. The “Irruption” Tour – named after the phenomenon of irregularly migrating birds – will make stops everywhere from Chicago to Mingo County, W. Va. 

The Irruption Tour, styled after large-scale musical circuits, came to life after fans of North Carolina FC asked their former player (and current FMFC captain) Connor Tobin to bring them some Wisconsin beer. Forward front office staff, along with fans and soccer celebrities, will end the trip by delivering a keg of New Glarus Spotted Cow to those fans at the game.

FMFC will broadcast content from its tour bus, which was provided by Metro Kia of Madison, on its social media channels during the trip. The Tour will kick off on Sept. 12 from Breese Stevens Field in Madison.

Forward Madison currently sits in fourth place in its inaugural USL League One season, occupying the league’s final playoff spot with four matches remaining. The Flamingos will play two more games at home this year, including an exhibition against the Milwaukee Torrent on Sept. 17.

Forward Madison FC inched back into USL League One playoff position Saturday night thanks to a 1-1 draw with South Georgia Tormenta FC at Breese Stevens Field. The Flamingos got on the board first thanks to Paulo Júnior’s fifth goal of the season, but couldn’t take full points in front of a crowd of 4,215.

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team had the momentum, but didn’t put the game away when it could have.

“We said playoff soccer is going to be difficult,” Shore said. “[The result] keeps us in fourth in the standings, [so we’ve] just got to keep plugging away.”

The Flamingos came into the game without Minnesota United loan players Carter Manley and Wyatt Omsberg, who were playing in the Loons’ exhibition match against Mexican team Pachuca. Without his regular starters available, Shore turned to Eric Leonard and Shaun Russell to fill in on the back line.

“We had to make a couple of changes, [and] I thought Shaun did a good job filling in at left back and then Eric did a great job filling in at center back,” Shore said. “I was really proud with the whole back line tonight and pleased with their performance.”

FMFC seemed quiet for much of the first half, but Paulo turned up the power in the 24th minute for the opening goal. The Flamingos needed only a few touches to find the back of the net, with J.C. Banks playing in a perfect one-time cross to the back post for Paulo to head home. Although the Brazilian fell to the ground in a heap afterwards, he arose a minute or so later to the sound of a rousing ovation. 

The Tormenta looked to strike back quickly, but FMFC goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre came up with a diving save in the 30th minute to deny the visitors. At halftime, the ‘Mingos held onto a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, South Georgia was pinned back and struggled to keep possession, but Forward couldn’t come up with many big chances to extend its lead. Danny Tenorio put a curling shot on goal in the 74th minute, but it wasn’t too much trouble for South Georgia’s Pablo Jara to catch.

Eventually, the Tormenta’s effort led to an equalizer through Marco Micaletto in the 80th minute. Micaletto laid the ball off to Jad Arslan, who returned the ball to him before unleashing a powerful shot that goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre just couldn’t keep out. Sylvestre had seemingly pawed the ball of his line, but the referee judged that it had in fact crossed the threshold.

According to Shore, South Georgia simply took advantage of their opportunity.

“Credit to them, they came after the game and scored a goal,” Shore said. They kept pushing the game from their end [when] they were down a goal.”

Forward Madison will return to USL League One play next Saturday as it travels to Virginia to take on the Richmond Kickers on Sept. 14. The Flamingos are back at Breese Stevens Field next Tuesday, Sept. 17 for a special exhibition match against the Milwaukee Torrent.

“None of these games are going to be easy,” Shore said. “The last four games are going to be hard. We’ve just got to keep grinding and we’ve got to go back, watch video [and] get better.”

Forward Madison FC can take one step closer to securing its playoff spot as it hosts South Georgia Tormenta FC at 7 p.m. this Saturday at Breese Stevens Field. The Flamingos currently occupy the fourth and final playoff place in USL League One, but are tied on points with Tormenta FC, which sits in fifth.

With the season winding down to its last matches, Head Coach Daryl Shore said Saturday’s game is one his team can’t afford to lose. 

“We’ve got to win the game, there’s no two cents about it,” Shore said. “We need to keep our focus on our task, which is being in the top four. We know this is a pivotal game and it’s one that we have to come out and put everything towards getting three points.”

Although FMFC lost 1-0 last Wednesday to the Greenville Triumph, favorable results over the weekend meant the Flamingos did not drop out of the top four. Still, Shore has had to deal with some late-season knocks: Paulo Júnior couldn’t play last week, while Don Smart and Jiro Barriga Toyama are still recovering from injuries sustained during the Greenville game.

According to Shore, it’s up to the whole team to step in when needed.

“It’s the old adage, next man up,” Shore said. “When you build a roster, you’re not just building eleven players.”

Even as they are faced with challenges, the Flamingos must feel they have a good opportunity to take full points from Tormenta FC, which has been on the slide as of late. The Tormenta have lost their past two games by a combined score of 9-1, and only won once in their last 10 outings.

Still, a team on the downturn could spring some surprises. With nothing working lately, South Georgia could try out new tactics or formations to get an edge over the Flamingos.

“We just have to be prepared for whatever they throw at us,” Shore said. “If I’m a coach that’s given up nine goals in the last two games, I’m probably going to try a few new things. At the same time, it might be that they go back to the old drawing board of what was giving them success early in the year.”

Forward Madison has already played South Georgia Tormenta twice in 2019, with the two clubs splitting the season series. The Tormenta won 1-0 in Madison in May, while Forward took the reverse fixture 2-1 in Statesboro in July. 

FMFC is promoting Saturday’s game as 80’s Pro Wrestling Night. Former wrestler “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan will make a special appearance at the game, and will take photos and sign autographs before kickoff. Fans can buy the “Hacksaw Pack,” which includes a game ticket, a 2×4 plank and an American flag.

Following its game against the Tormenta, Forward Madison will travel to Virginia to take on the Richmond Kickers on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Flamingos return home on Tuesday, Sept. 17 for an exhibition match with the Milwaukee Torrent.

Forward Madison midfielder Ally Hamis Ng’Anzi has become the first-ever FMFC player to earn a national team call-up, the club announced Friday. Ng’Anzi was called in to the Tanzanian National Team for its 2022 World Cup qualifier matches against Burundi on Sept. 4 and 8.

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, Ng’Anzi’s call-up is a testament to the level of play featured at Forward Madison and in USL League One.

“We’re excited for Ally, it’s a great accomplishment for him,” Shore said. “It’s also a good thing for our club to have someone be able to play for their national team in a World Cup qualifier. It shows that our club is serious about the level of players we bring in.”

Although other Flamingos have played for their national teams in the past (Josiel Núñez has made 14 appearances for Panama), Ng’Anzi is the first to receive the honor while on Madison’s roster. Ng’Anzi’s had previously played with Tanzania’s youth teams, but this is his first call-up to the senior side.  

Ng’Anzi, who is with the ‘Mingos on a season-long loan from Minnesota United FC, earned praise after his first League One start in June, with Shore saying afterwards that he “stepped into a pressure cooker and more than held his own.”

Ng’Anzi has played four games in all competitions this year for the Flamingos. According to Shore, his effort with the team has not gone unnoticed.

“It’s a testament to all the work he’s put in this year,” Shore said. “Even though he hasn’t played a lot of games for us, in the games he’s played he’s done well and he trains hard every day.”

Ng’Anzi’s had previously played with Tanzania’s youth teams, but this is his first call-up to the senior side.  

Ng’Anzi, who is with the ‘Mingos on a season-long loan from Minnesota United FC, earned praise after his first League One start in June, with Shore saying afterwards that he “stepped into a pressure cooker and more than held his own.”

Ng’Anzi has played four games in all competitions this year for the Flamingos. According to Shore, his effort with the team has not gone unnoticed.

“It’s a testament to all the work he’s put in this year,” Shore said. “Even though he hasn’t played a lot of games for us, in the games he’s played he’s done well and he trains hard every day.”

Forward Madison set a new regular season attendance record Saturday, but dropped to fourth in the USL League One standings after a close 0-1 home loss to Greenville Triumph. The crowd of 4,663 – aided by an appearance from actor Leslie David Baker, who played Stanley in NBC’s “The Office” – was ultimately denied a positive result by Greenville midfielder Christopher Bermudez, who scored the winner near the end of the first half.

With five games left to play in the Flamingos’ inaugural League One season, Head Coach Daryl Shore, said his team has to respond quickly to make it up to its supporters.

“You can’t say enough about our fans, I apologize to them for letting them down,” Shore said. “This wasn’t what we anticipated but we’re not out of it and we’ve just got to keep plugging away. We’re not going to get down on ourselves. We know that we still have it in our hands.”

Although neither team created many gilt-edged chances at the start of the game, Greenville took the lead just before the break through Bermudez, who took down a cross from Aaron Walker before curling a shot past Brian Sylvestre at the far post. Forward Madison had its own chance to respond immediately thanks to Josiel Núñez, whose shot from point-blank range was cleared off the line by defender Tyler Polak.

According to Shore, Greenville packed numbers into its defense after the goal, making it more difficult for the Flamingos to break them down.

“They’re very well organized,” Shore said. “Once they scored the goal, they [basically] put 12 guys behind the ball. They just defended well and they have a good goalkeeper.” 

The second half became more of a defensive display, with Greenville taking off the goalscorer Bermudez for the more defensively-minded Paul Clowes and sitting deep behind the ball. As the Triumph sat back, the Flamingos struggled to penetrate a defense the has conceded fewer goals than any other in USL League One.

A fingertip save from Brian Sylvestre denied a second Greenville goal in the 76th minute, but the Flamingos couldn’t turn it around and find an equalizer.

According to Forward Madison captain Connor Tobin, FMFC needs to bounce back quickly to keep its championship dreams alive.

“(There are) five games left, we’re backs against the wall,” Tobin said. “We keep talking in the locker room, you’ve got to respond to adversity. We’re at a point in our season where it’s do-or-die, and we’ll see what the guys are made of.”
